Trials 2008
Trials 2008 consist of:
- Two Early Drilled Wheat sites, one at Langton and one at Sancton drilled on the 31st August 07
- A Barley Site at Langton which was drilled on the 8th September 07
- The main Winter Wheat site is at Langton and was drilled on the 12th September 07
- A 2nd Wheat Site at Market Weighton drilled on the 16th September 07
- A Winter Wheat demo site at Millington which was drilled on the 18th September and a Winter Wheat demo site at Lincoln which was drilled on the 19th
These are all, once again, in conjunction, with Nickerson/Advanta – so we must be doing something right!
Our Early Wheat Site at Langton contains a combination of varieties, seed treatments, seed rates and fungicide strategy.
The Barley Site has over 160 new, coded varieties. We have selected 20 established varieties and replicated them in order to use different strategies to highlight their strengths and weakness’.
The main Winter Wheat site at Langton is spread over 8 tramlines consisting of 672 plots.
This year we are continueing to look at the relevance between nutrition and disease control in some small plot work, this has become even more important due to input costs rising. Its essential to keep costs low while keeping the quaility and yeild high. We are also evaluating various new and established varieties in order to tease out the traits of each to get the best out of them for our growers. We will be comparing cost and efficacy of different fungicide strategies and continuing our work with local millers to help the grower and end user get the most out of there collaboration. We are also looking at Bio Ethanol varieties for starch content and Bio Physiology with ADAS in terms of earliness and resilience for yield in a changing climate.
We have added a second wheat site at Market Weighton, this is over two tramlines consisting of 40 varieties treated and untreated.
All the sites are looking well; the only element that has stood out is the slow emergence of our Alchemy plots in the main Winter Wheat site. All other sites have had even emergence across the plots including the early wheat sites with the varying seed treatments.
